With introduction of snowboards in the 1990’s, many skiers switched to snowboards as they provided a carving sensation (when the skier felt the centrifugal force), which could not be matched by standard skis due to their size, shape and material.
However, with the availability of various new composite materials, ski manufacturers were able to manufacture skis shaped to product the carving effect. These skis were broad at the tip and tail, narrow at the waist (central portion). By adjusting the sidecut, it is possible to make the skis turn easily.
If a ski does not have a sidecut, it will be difficult for the skier to turn. The deeper the sidecut, the easier it will be for the skier to turn. If the radius of the sidecut is small , it will be difficult to turn, but the ski will be more stable at higher speeds, which is preferred by racers participating in competitive sports.

Skiing was first used as a method of transportation in cold weather over snow. Skis, which were originally wood planks are bound to the feet using ski bindings. Skiing has developed into a recreational and competitive sport in many countries with a temperate climate.
A ski is a flat device worn on the feet, which help the wearer glide smoothly over the snow. The pressure due to the weight of the person and the surface friction melt the snow under the ski. A thin layer of water is created and the skier glides over it.
Though many skis still have a wooden core, many are made from a number of light weight material like Kevlar, fiberglass, titanium and other composite materials. They are long, thin, pointed and curved upwards at the front to move smoothly over the snow. The ski boots worn by the skier are connected to the skis through bindings, though many manufacturers have started integrating the bindings and the skis.
It is not easy to learn Skiing, and there are many ski schools that teach the various skiing techniques. Initially beginners start skiing under a trained instructor . The terrain is not steep and skiing speeds are low, so there is little risk of injury to the skier.
Alpine skiing is the most popular form of skiing, which is offered by many ski resorts. A skier reaches the summit of hill and then skis downhill along a specified path (the ski trail), propelled by gravity. Most ski resorts will use mechanical equipment to make the ski path smooth.
